Tree Planting
We are involved in various ongoing tree planting projects around the Ogwen Valley. Native trees not only provide shelter and food for birds and animals, it also helps prevent climate change by absorbing CO2 from the air and stabilizing the water level. In 2020, we planted oak trees as a gift from DEG in Gerlan and with the help of the National Trust at Nant Ffrancon.
Ogwen Orchards
The aim of creating community orchards is to bring people together, learn how to cultivate fruit trees, learn about important habitats and species. By working together, we can increase the availability of local and seasonal food (for free!), Eat and process food together, reduce loneliness, and perhaps even create a small business or business opportunity two? We have planted fruit trees in 6 sites along the valley in the winter of 2020-21 (with grants from Social Farms & Gardens and Gwynedd Council), donated trees to individuals, and will come together again as an orchard group once the rules allow that.
Gardens and allotments
We have a number of projects underway relating to gardens and allotments (early 2021). Gardening projects once again aim to come together to reduce loneliness, grow local food for use in our community, learn from each other about gardening and cooking. Gardening is also good for exercise and good for getting rid of stress! Also of course it's an opportunity to beautify the area with flowers and hedgerows that attract insects which are important in pollinating all the crops! And create events around food!
